Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Yakima replacement Control Tower. This is going to replace one damaged Yakima Control Tower. And if you are looking for a replacement oftentimes it can be difficult to find just one but that's exactly what this is. It's going to replace just the one Control Tower for you so you can get up and operational again. Now this is designed for vehicles with a factory rack track.
It will mount onto your vehicle-specific Landing Pads which are sold separately. They are gonna be required for installation. This will lock into the Landing Pad for a nice custom fit. Now the lock can be switched out locked with your same key system cores. So use your core from the original tower, put it in place here so that all of your Yakima locks will be keyed alike.
As far as our dimensions go. If we measure from the top of our crossbar where it would be installed to the top of where our Landing Pad would be installed it's gonna be right about three inches. It's gonna be kind of difficult for me to line up with the ruler there, but right about three inches. The complete tower height will depend on your Landing Pad application. So make sure that you're getting the right Landing Pad for your vehicle.

Replacement part works great. Pricey for 1 control tower, but it is what it is. At least I didn't have to buy a set of 4 to replace the 1 busted tower. Overall happy to buy through etrailer.
Purchased four of these to replace some Qtowers. So far my only regret is I did not attach to the camper shell from the beginning. Had some slippage issues with Qclips I was using on the access cab of a ‘15 Tacoma. Disappointing experience after using Qclips on numerous vehicles over the years. Hoping these control towers stand the test of time. Purchased Landing Pads #6 for attaching to shell.
These are older style Yakima track-mount towers for the classic Yakima round bars, not easy to find so I was glad etrailer had them. Installed perfectly same as original ones I had years ago, and accepted Ya,kima locks. I used them to make up a second set of narrower racks so I don't always have to use the wide racks on long trips if I only have one canoe or kayak.

Needs instructions for moving the lock to the new tower.
The item was exactly as described and what I needed, a replacement for ome that got broken, and it was a perfect fit. Once I figured out how to take the lock out of the old one and put it in the new one (thanks youtube!) it was an easy installation.
I would recommend including a simple sheet of paper on how to move the locks:
1. unlock the old control tower.
2. insert the control key (looks like an uncut blank) that came with the original rack set/equipment and with a little jiggle the lock core will pop out.
3. insert the lock core into the new tower and then remove the control key.
I've been using Yakima Control Tower racks for over 20 years and etrailer is one of the few places that has replacement parts stock (not even Yakima has some of these parts anymore). So I'm pleased since even though the Yakima system has been stout it's not immortal!
Got this to replace a factory tower that lost the battle against a ratchet strap. Fit in with no problems and works perfectly.
Technician worked with me to identify old Yakima towers. He asked me to send photos of the old towers. From the photos he was able to identify the proper Yakima towers. The towers were quickly sent and fit perfectly on the rails. Thank you.

Fine, no problemds.
These are some fine towers. I had one issue (my own fault) where I ran my 10' long 4" diameter water storage pipe into the wall while backing up, and the towers popped out of the track... which is exactly what I would have expected as that saved the tracks from getting ripped off the top of my camper shell.
I'm glad I got these, and I will be shopping etrailer.com in the future.

I've used etrailer for several items in the past, each time with prompt and excellent service. This time one of the items was defective. I called customer service and the woman helping me was helpful and capable. I had a return label in minutes and a new part on the way the same day. I don't know how to improve on that.

The new control tower fit fine and was easy to install.Ordering was easy as well. I was frustrated however when I attempted to remove my old lock cylinder and install it in the new tower. Prior to purchasing the new tower I watched a video on the E Trailer site and the video mentioned that switching over the cylinder was an easy task. It didn't mention that one needed a special key, in addition to the actual lock key. If it had, I'd have ordered it at the time. Now I have to order the "special" key, which likely will not arrive in time for an upcoming trip.
Where this tower and an appropriate landing pad can be used, it seems to be the simplest and most secure way to attach a rack since the demise of rain gutters.
Replaced a damaged control tower mounted on Landing Pad 1. Changed out the lock core and was back in business in no time. Great Service from etrailer to determine correct replacement part.
I have been using Yakima products for years. Great quality. Wanted to build a specialty rack without dismantling my other racks. All my local dealers were out of stock with no idea when they would be resupplied. Etrailer. com had parts in stock and were shipped immediately. These are the only guys that had the part I needed. Control towers were discontinued a few years ago and Etrailer had the part I needed.
